Chapter 240: Plans (1)
The official announcement was repeated three times. Yao Ran listened carefully as the helicopter slowly flew by, broadcasting the announcement through several speakers.
Previously, most of the news and announcements they heard came from insiders or rumors. This was the first official announcement made by the military about the base's construction.
The military used helicopters to spread the news for three days before stopping. The announcement proved very effective.
Long Yu and the others would go out every night to search for supplies, and they usually would encounter a few groups of survivors on the road. However, a few days after the military's announcement, they no longer ran into any survivors.
Perhaps some survivors, like them, were hiding in corners of the city, but most had likely left overnight.
Many residents in the Ling Yuan apartment complex also packed their luggage and headed to the Juncheng military base. The once-crowded apartment building now houses less than a hundred people.
On this day, Long Yu and the others returned before sunrise. Hearing noises outside, Yao Ran went out and saw her boyfriend's tired face and a few scratches on his cheek.
She approached him and asked worriedly, "What happened to you?"
Long Yu shook his head and replied, "I'm fine. While we were looking for supplies, we encountered a few rats. Judging by their size, it seems they have mutated."
Hearing this, Yao Ran's eyes flickered. She pulled Long Yu closer to inspect the scratches on his cheek.
Seeing her worried look, he smiled and said, "The rats didn't cause these wounds. When we were fighting, the building collapsed, and I got hit by the debris."
After hearing his explanation, Yao Ran's heart trembled, and a memory of him protecting her from debris flashed through her mind.
Long Yu noticed her pale expression and quickly said, "Don't worry, Ran Ran. I'm alright."
Yao Ran held his hand tightly and then looked at the others. Noticing that all of them had various injuries, she said, "I will go get my medicine box."
Leaving those words behind, she hurriedly returned to her apartment while Long Yu and the others returned to unit 2001. Soon, Yao Ran came with the medicine box.
In the living room, Yao Ran sat beside Long Yu and began cleaning his wounds.
While she treated Long Yu's injuries, Shi Xuan said, "Captain, we have collected enough construction supplies and even managed to find two trucks. I think we should focus on finding other supplies now while the city isn't completely engulfed in flames."
Jia Xiang added, "We also need to find water. Although we still have water in the water towers, it must have almost used up after so long."
Huang Qian sighed and said, "No matter how frugal we are, our water supply won't last long. Now that the city is running out of water, should we leave like everyone else to find water?"
Shi Xuan looked at him and said, "The extreme heat and drought are not only affecting Juncheng City and our country. This might happen worldwide. Are you sure we will find water if we leave the city?"
"Besides, the base has only started its first phase of construction, so we can't live there yet. If the weather suddenly shifts, where would we go to stay safe? By then, we might not die of thirst or starvation but from heatstroke or frostbite."
The extreme weather had left deep trauma for all the survivors, including Shi Xuan and the others. Leaving this relatively safe place to face an uncertain future was not an easy decision to make.
After Shi Xuan spoke, everyone looked at Long Yu and Yao Ran. Feeling their stares, Yao Ran calmly applied medicine to Long Yu's wound before turning to face them.
Seeing that the two hadn't responded, Jia Xiang asked, "Captain, what do you think?"
Instead of answering, Long Yu looked at Yao Ran, making it clear that he would follow her decision. Since Long Yu had shifted the power to make the decision for her, Yao Ran had no choice but to reply.
"I don't plan to leave for now. As Shi Xuan said, extreme weather and natural disasters are happening everywhere. If conditions are similar everywhere, why not stay here and try to find water first?"
"Juncheng City is a second-tier city, so there should still be supplies left untouched. Moreover, more than half the survivors have already left, and the military has pulled back to the Juncheng military base. I'm confident that we will find water if we search thoroughly." After she spoke, Long Yu added, "I'm staying, too. We have two trucks now, but we are short on gasoline. If we do decide to leave, we will need to find more fuel and spare parts first." The others pondered on their words in silence.
After a while, Shi Xuan asked, "Captain, should we separate to find supplies?"
Long Yu looked at him, and Shi Xuan explained, "We have enough people to form four teams. We can divide the tasks of finding water, gasoline, and supplies, as well as defending our homes, to each team. With this arrangement, we can save time and work more efficiently."
The others nodded in agreement at his suggestion.
Long Yu considered this for a while and said, "Then Yao Ran and I will search for water, and you can divide the other tasks. We need to gather as many supplies as possible before the fire reaches this area."
Shi Xuan and the others nodded, "Yes, Captain."
After they made their decision, Shi Xuan took out a map. They began marking areas where they might find supplies while Yao Ran continued treating their wounds. When she had finished, Long Yu and the others had chosen their destination.
Long Yu looked at the others and said, "I will go to Hubin Lake with Yao Ran after sunset. Hubin Lake is 50 kilometers from here, so we might need to find a truck first and bring the water towers and buckets."n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
