Chapter 239: Official Announcement
Chapter 239: Official Announcement
There was a rule against soldiers accepting items from civilians, but in their current situation, the soldier had no choice but to accept Yao Ran's gift. The extreme heat made it nearly
impossible to work without enough to drink.
After giving the soldier the water and sweet mung bean soup, Yao Ran returned to the apartment building. Before heading upstairs, she reminded Grandma Quan and Grandpa Quan not to stay outside for too long.
When the residents saw her leaving, they sighed in relief. Being in the same place as that 'female devil' was nerve-wracking. They don't know when she will go crazy and kill people. Returning to her apartment, Yao Ran sat on her balcony, watching the workers work below while eating ice cream.
The workers first selected a flat area away from drainage ditches or buildings for the well. The expert then determined the water source's location, set up the drilling equipment, and let the workers dig the soil.
A diesel engine powered the drill, creating loud sounds as they worked. The topsoil was removed, and water was added to the well pit to help the drill turn more effectively.
Finding water in such extreme heat was challenging. The workers dug all day, but no water could be found, so they had to start again in a different spot.
On the third day, a worker suddenly shouted from inside the hole. His excited voice echoed from the hole and could be heard clearly.
"Found it! There is a water source here!"
When his words echoed in the surroundings, everyone's eyes lit up with hope. They had expected another day of working without finding water, but just as the sun rose on the horizon, the worker felt water wetting his feet.
While the workers worked faster, the residents saw the first bucket of water taken out from the well and shouted excitedly.
"The water is coming out! We finally have water!"n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
"Thank goodness! Now we don't have to worry about dying of thirst."
"Thank you for giving us a chance to survive!"
Water was indeed coming out of the well, which was more than one thousand meters deep- the deepest well the diggers had ever worked on.
After finding the water source, they continued digging to open up the wellspring.
Previously, they only needed to dig four hundred meters to find water, but now they had to dig more than a thousand meters, and the water quality was not as good as before.
The workers dug for another five hours before stopping. Before leaving, the government staff reminded the residents to use the water sparingly and not waste it, as the water was hard to come by. After the soldiers and the well-digging team left, the patrol soldiers took control of the well.
The captain announced over the loudspeaker as the soldiers cleared the soil from the area. "We will distribute water tonight. Each person will receive a half bucket of water every day on a first-come, first-served basis. If you arrive late and the well water is exhausted, you will have to come back tomorrow."
Hearing this, the residents hurried home to prepare their buckets. There are still more than twelve hours until nightfall, but residents are already waiting downstairs with their empty buckets.
Now that the community had a water source, the military stopped distributing water to survivors in the area. Since the Ling Yuan apartment complex was the only community with a well, many survivors from other communities came to get water.
To prevent conflict between the residents and these newcomers, the military increased security, guarding the well, and increased surveillance at the Ling Yuan complex and its surroundings.
A few more days passed, and the quality of the water worsened day by day. Yao Ran didn't go to fetch water herself, but she overheard residents' conversations while on a night walk with Long Yu.
"Oh, the water quality is getting worse and worse. The water was quite clear yesterday, but it's extremely turbid today. Looks like this well is going to dry up!" Said a middle-aged woman as she passed by the entrance gate.
Another resident sighed and said worriedly, "If this well dries up, we will have no water. What will we do then?"
As Yao Ran walked past them, she noticed that the soldiers had reduced the water supply from half a bucket per person to only two liters.
Some residents protested, but a soldier replied calmly, "Go away if you don't want it."
The resident was left speechless by the soldier's words and could only fall silent and wait in line obediently.
One week later, the well finally dried up.
When the residents heard the news, they could only return home in a daze with empty buckets. The only good news was that the temperature had gradually lowered, finally staying at 70 degrees Celsius.
Although the temperature was slowly going down, the fire in Juncheng City continued to roar and spread, causing the nearby temperature to rise sharply. Due to the high temperatures, frequent spontaneous combustions occurred everywhere.
The tall buildings not far from the Ling Yuan apartment complex were engulfed in thick smoke, and the choking smell of burning could be smelled from several streets away.
Chemical furnaces in factories outside Juncheng City exploded, sending black smoke into the air, and the sky returned to a murky gray.
Standing on the balcony, Yao Ran watched fires burn across several areas of Juncheng City. She took a sip of her cold watermelon juice and frowned slightly.
'If the fire keeps spreading, I will need to leave this place.'
While she was thinking, a helicopter flew over the Ling Yuan apartment complex. Yao Ran looked up and saw a large megaphone attached to the helicopter, broadcasting the same
announcement repeatedly.
"Attention, survivors! Attention, survivors! Attention, survivors!"
"Two hundred kilometers southeast of Juncheng City, an official survivor base has been established. The base, staffed and protected by the military, can accommodate two million people. All survivors are urged to head to the Juncheng military base as soon as possible."
