Chapter 587: Chapter 587 - The Wolf’s Silent Vow
Broken rode on Polly with Cedric seated behind him. Beside them, a beast ran alongside, carrying a woman with short brown hair clad in green and brown light armor. This was Jovina, an Enchanter and Beast Master, and also Goldrich's frequent mission partner.
They traveled toward the nearby forest outside Slumdon Town. After a while, they dismounted, entering the shadowed depths of the woods. Cedric moved ahead of the others and turned back to Broken. "Lord Broken, I have brought our guest to you."
From behind the dense trees, there was a blur of movement, a shadow slipping between the trunks. Then, stepping out into view, emerged a massive wolf with a dark body streaked with cracks, as if magma lay beneath its skin.
"Fang," Broken murmured the name under his breath.
A low growl rumbled from the wolf, then Fang lowered his body and pressed it to the ground in a gesture of respect.Nôv(el)B\\jnn
"Fang greets Lord Broken, Baron of Slumdon, the Savior of the Moonlight Fae," the wolf spoke in a deep voice.
Broken stepped forward. "So, you've gained full awareness, Fang?"
"It happened after the curse was lifted. I now have full control over this body. Only... I can't return to my original form, like the others."
Broken turned to Cedric. "Is it only the recently transformed who returned to normal, Cedric?"
Cedric bowed slightly. "Yes, my Lord, only the Faes who transformed into Fae Beasts that night regained their original forms. My father... didn't."
Broken nodded slowly, a soft smile forming. At least Cedric could be with his father again, even if Fang had been unable to reclaim his true form.
Broken looked back at Fang. "So, what's the plan now, Fang?"
"My Lord," the wolf replied. "I have served the Moonlight Fae for as long as I can remember, and my heart remains with them. But we both know the tribe is no more. You freed us and lifted the curse. I wish to pledge my loyalty to you. Use this Eternal Flame wolf as you see fit."
Curious, Broken checked his Affinity with Fang. It seemed that, thanks to the quest he'd completed, his default affinity with any surviving Moonlight Fae started at a high value, 47%. Perhaps that was why Fang had made this decision so quickly.
But there was a reason he had brought Jovina along today. Fang's massive form would be a challenge to manage within the town. The wolf was too large, and his appearance would surely frighten the townsfolk and even some of the visiting players.
It wasn't that Broken didn't want to reveal Fang to the public, but with Fang's immense combat potential, he'd planned to keep his ace hidden. He checked Fang's stats again. Last he remembered, Fang had been around level 255... but now?
Level 225?
"What happened to your level, Fang? Wasn't it higher?"
"It dropped once the curse lifted. This is still lower than my original Fae level."
Broken sighed. Classic game nerf. The game was always this harsh with players. A boss
monster that once required a full party to handle, or, in Fang's case, two Knight Grand Crosses —was now downgraded?
Still, level 225 was nothing to scoff at, and Fang would be a powerful deterrent to anyone foolish enough to challenge Broken.
And so, he'd keep Fang hidden. Better for people to underestimate his true strength. With a plan already forming, Broken knew exactly how he'd use this advantage.
Broken turned to Jovina beside him. "Jovina."
"Don't tell me..." she muttered, raising an eyebrow.
"Yes, I need your help with this."
"Wait, Broken. Have you lost your mind? Are you serious?"
"I am. I want you to form a contract with Fang and take care of him."
"No way! Fang is way too high-level, and his grade's too high, too! He'd take up two slots in my beast roster. Besides, he's insanely powerful. Are you really sure you want me to handle him?"
"Yes. You're the only Beast Master I trust."
"What about Marlene? You spend way more time with her."
"She's... on the opposite side, remember?"
Jovina sighed. "Broken, listen. If I contract Fang, he'll be under my command."
"Yes, but this way, he'll get proper care, and you'll be able to keep him in your pocket dimension."
Jovina sighed again. "And what if I betray you and use him to attack you?"
"Please do." Broken smiled.
"Where does that confidence come from, huh? I have no binding loyalty to you."
"What if we make one after this?"
"What kind of bond? I won't form a contract! Make that clear."
"Listen to me, Jovina. Form a contract with Fang, or don't. But he needs care and a place to
stay out of sight."
"I'll do it... but I want clarification."
"Just do it!"
"No, I won't! I might be ambitious, but Fang needs to follow you alone."
They debated back and forth for a while, with Jovina stubbornly refusing to contract Fang.
"Fang would attract too much attention if we brought him into town," Broken said, trying to reason with her.
"That's obviously a problem," Jovina admitted.
"Can you cancel the contract if it becomes a burden?"
"No way, having a beast as powerful as Fang is every Beast Master's dream!"
Broken considered his options. Perhaps he'd need to wait until he could form his own guild. This girl wasn't going to be easy to convince.
With no other options left, Broken resigned himself to delaying things a bit longer. Perhaps Fang would need to wait a week, or maybe even a month. He turned back to the wolf.
"Fang, stay in this forest, deep enough that the level is around 220 or higher. Not many people explore that far in. Wait for me just a little while longer."
"Lord Broken, such a wait is nothing for one who has lived hundreds of years," Fang replied
calmly.
Broken gave a faint smile. Right.
After that, they headed back toward Slumdon Town. As he walked, a subtle smile formed on
his face, and he took a deep breath. He had a big project he'd been planning to start soon, one
he could finally focus on.
It was time to begin work on his long-delayed project, the Unseen Universe Necklace.
