CH.536 Alpha and Pack Leader

CH.536 Alpha and Pack Leader

I think it comes as no surprise, but the reason I was able to stay as a fenrir-kin is because I got the skill Alpha. Not really sure why, you get it from … being commanding … specifically to people, or monsters, that don’t belong to you.

… Yeah. I guess I just explained it to myself, didn’t I?

Pack Leader, the class race, is a class race any beast-folk can get. As long as they are the leader of a ‘Pack’. The term pack, at least for the System when it comes to the Pack Leader class race, is classified as a group of either beast-folk, or monsters. To get the Pack Leader class race, you have to be the leader of such a pack.

But, and this is the problem, the pack members cannot be slaves or tamed monsters. Specifically they cannot be your slaves or monsters tamed by you.

So in my case, while people like Einar, Eline, Unika, Molly and Cina would all count as my pack members, Rani and Glad don’t. But monsters tamed by Einar and Unika do.

But that hadn’t been enough for the class race to open, so I think at least a few of the monsters on The Wild Pack’s ranch may have seen me as a pack leader, even if they weren’t technically a part of my pack. They should belong to Indigo’s pack.

But maybe Indigo isn’t assertive enough? Maybe she uses her cerberus, Tugga I think she called him, as a sort of crutch to keep control? She did offer to get him as soon as we had some difficulties. And because of that, the monsters and people here belong to Tugga’s pack. And since monsters tamed by you don’t count, Tugga’s pack doesn’t count, and Indigo can’t be a pack leader.

So when a stronger beast comes for a visit, the people here can jump packs. At least that is my theory.

But whatever. I got Pack Leader, and know the funny part about that? It comes with a nice little racial skill called Alpha. Yes, you can get that skill through other means, but Pack Leader is one of them. And unlike with Wolf-kin, Pack Leader automatically unlocked the Alpha skill for me.

And thus, I can stay a Fenrir-kin, without the union with Nir, since the requirements I needed for Fenrir-kin were to have the Wolf-kin race unlocked, and having the Alpha skill.

I do feel a bit bad for Indigo if her pack members are actually trying to jump packs. But at the same time, there isn’t much I can do. I can’t just bring her to HomeBase and train her. She has a clan to lead.

… I guess I could send someone from HomeBase to here, but I don’t really want excessive Level Up! use outside of HomeBase. It can lead to some … questionable things. Like the maids working in the Watchman family manor. Christina does level them up, so they are what you might call ‘super maids’.

And at the end of the day, it isn’t my problem.

As for my sense of smell, without Nir it wasn’t nearly as powerful. I could still tell apart genders, but the things about ‘breedability’ were beyond my current capabilities. So that must have come from Nir, but it is probably something I can learn. Not that I really need to learn that.

Well, it might actually tell me when I can impregnate Janina. I know she can also tell when I’m strong enough, so I don’t really need to. But it might still be cool.

Alpha, as a skill, isn’t that complicated. It is actually kind of like Lua’s unique skill. Well, a part of it.

Lua’s Dhampir Princess has a part called Dhampir Order. She can use it to give commands to Dhampirs and they are persuaded to follow the order.

Alpha is like that, but for Beast-folk, and not quite as powerful as Lua’s Dhampir Order. Dhampir Order is still a part of a unique skill, while Alpha is just a racial skill.

And even Dhampir Order can be resisted. Without any sort of ‘Mental Influence Resistance’ skill.

So yeah. Alpha is a fine skill, but nothing crazy.

In the evening, we left The Wild Pack’s domain. I showed them my airship, yes it is actually a spaceship, but the locals won’t know the difference. I promised we’d come back again, both because I honestly wanted to, and because maybe I can get the members to understand that not all humans are bad.

I think they do. From what I heard from the people that are there because of that reason, a lot of them were just never even given a chance. A human focused party might have been looking for a member, but the beast-folk are just told no, without a chance to show their skills. And then some random no skill human is taken instead.

Well, I’m not like that. You can be a no-skill anyone and get a job on HomeBase because we have this thing called on-the-job training. And Level Ups.

On the way back, I decided to check my stats, as I did get a new skill.

Spoiler

Yeah. Two things I didn’t know I got, but I do appreciate. Language Comprehension (beast) is just convenient. I can finally understand Glad and Rani without needing a translator.

The other new skill, that I didn’t know about, is the Fenrir-kin racial skill Unchained. It is actually a really cool skill, as it is basically resistance to any sort of binding or control skill.

For example, if someone tries to mind control me, Unchained gives me resistance. Or if someone uses a skill like Dark Chain on me, I’d have resistance to it.

Any sort of binding or control skill. Sure it might not be as good as a dedicated ‘Mind Control Resistance’, but it is still a good skill. And who said I can’t have both?

Back home, I decided to test my new Unchained skill.

I started by changing into a Dhampir and having Lua try and order me around. It wasn’t too difficult to resist her orders, but when she ordered me to kiss her, well, I couldn’t resist.

Then I tried with Alice. She used her Unique-Racial skill to use mind control magic in an attempt to control me. And while she did succeed in mind controlling me, I was able to break her control, though admittedly I did have to put in a lot of effort.

So in a real battle, if someone actually manages to mind control me, the time it takes to break free is way too long, so I’ll need to work on that.

After my training, I washed the day's grime off of my body, before relaxing in one of the large baths, as someone entered the spa. I didn’t expect anything, there are plenty of times when one of the males that have access to the spa come in while I’m here.

By the way, the students don’t use this spa. I made a separate one for them after the first group. This place got too busy and I didn’t like it, so having a second, and maybe a third one, made sense. The third one is mixed gender, by the way, while the first two are separated by gender.

I also had my private one in my bedroom, but I like to use the one employees use, unless I’m bathing with my girls.

I turned around to see who came in, only to immediately revert my eyes.

“Unika! … Did you enter the wrong room? This is the male bath.” I told her, while simultaneously using Dungeon Founder to confirm that I was in the right room. And thankfully, I was.

She was naked, covered only by a bath towel, and her two tails swinging behind her were trying hard to lift the towel. How did I know she was naked? Well, all of HomeBase swimsuits do have shoulder straps, and I didn’t see any on Unika. And because of her tails, her towel was lifted to the point where I should have seen her bottoms if she had any.

“... I’m sorry. I asked Agunan if anyone else was here and asked him to lock the door.” Unika explained.

“... okay? But why are ..?”

“May I speak first?” Unika interrupted me.

“... go ahead.” I let her.

“... could I join you in the water?”

“... if you want to.” I answered. “We really are breaking all the rules, but then again, I made the rules, so I guess I’m allowed to bend them.”

Unika got into the bath and sat down, right next to me. She then seemingly gathered her thoughts, before she spoke.

“... Brian. … Is it wrong if I think you are amazing?” She asked.

“No. Of course not. I’m sure you can ask anyone on HomeBase and they’ll agree with you.”

“... Then is it wrong … if I want to be like them? Like Lucia, Alice, Cailie, Wilma? Even the supreme dragon is courting you. And now you just … turned into a Fenrir-kin. … It isn’t fair. Why are you so amazing?” I was expecting for Unika to raise her voice, but she stayed calm.

“... without you, I’d be dead in that dungeon. And even if I survived, we’d still be barely living in the capital. And you just came into our lives like … like a god.”

“At least say like an angel. We don’t want to piss off the Goddess, now do we?”

“You can summon creatures you call gods. I think I can call you a god without Her getting angry.” Unika reasoned. “Besides, can’t you talk with Her whenever you want?”

“Whenever She wants.” I corrected. “I can ask her for a meeting, but I’ll only get one if She agrees.”

“Most people would say those are close enough. Just the fact that you can request a meeting with the Goddess is like a slave being able to ask for a meeting with the King.”

“Actually, slaves can do that, if there is sufficient proof that their master, who has to be a noble for this to be the case, is abusing them or otherwise going against their contract. But that only applies if the master is a high ranked noble.” I told her.

That is actually the law. There are plenty of protection laws that protect slaves. And if you need to punish a high ranked noble, like a Duke or a Marquess, only the King can really do that.

But I don’t think this is the time to think about laws.

“... Can you be serious while I’m trying to confess?” Unika asked.

“Sorry.” I apologized and patted her head between the ears. As I did that, I brought my Fenrir tail, because yes, I was still a Fenrir-kin, from my other side and laid it onto Unika’s lap. “Here. Hold onto this. Squeeze it if I say something dumb.”

“I’ll try not to.” Unika said, as she gently ran her hand through the fur on my tail. It felt pretty nice, and reminded me a lot about Wilma fussing over my dwarf beard.

“... Do I actually need to say something more?” Unika asked.

“A ‘I love you, please let me join your harem’ wouldn’t be so bad.” I pointed out.

“Well, you said it already.” Unika noted. “... and it is embarrassing.”

“You want to know what else is?” I asked.

“... no?”

“You having to ask the other five. If they accept you, I’ll accept you. Hope that is fine with you.”

“... can I pet your tail while I do?”

“Nope. Today is a special service, but you will lose your petting privileges after today. Also, you are cleaning both of the employee baths for the stunt you pulled.” I told her, with a smirk on my face.

“... Can I hate you already?” Unika asked.

“You can, but it might complicate the loving me part. Then again, love and hate aren’t opposites. Sometimes they compliment each other.”
