The Demon Queen's Contract

Chapter 51: Nightmare

I was standing in the courtyard, the sky an ominous shade of red. In the center of the courtyard stood Elara, but something was terribly wrong. Her eyes, normally so full of life and warmth, were cold and unfeeling. In her hand, she held a dagger, its blade gleaming menacingly in the eerie light.

"Elara, what are you doing?" I called out, my voice echoing through the silence.

She didn't respond. Instead, she raised the dagger, her movements slow and deliberate. My heart pounded in my chest as I realized she was walking towards me, her expression blank and devoid of any recognition.

"Elara, stop! Please!" I pleaded, but she kept advancing, her grip on the dagger tightening.

Just as she reached me, she plunged the dagger into my chest. The pain was excruciating, and I felt my life draining away. As I collapsed to the ground, I looked up at her, searching for any sign of the woman I loved. But all I saw was emptiness.

With a jolt, I awoke, drenched in sweat and gasping for breath. My heart was still racing, the terror of the nightmare lingering. I turned to my side and saw Elara, peacefully asleep, her breathing steady and calm. The sight of her, so serene and untroubled, brought me a small measure of comfort, but it did little to dispel the horror of what I had just experienced.

I took a few deep breaths, trying to steady my racing heart. It was just a dream, I told myself. Just a nightmare. It didn't mean anything. But the fear and the vividness of it had shaken me to my core.

I slipped out of bed quietly, careful not to wake Elara. I needed to clear my head, to shake off the lingering effects of the nightmare. I made my way to the balcony, the cool night air washing over me as I stepped outside.

The stars were scattered across the sky, twinkling like tiny beacons of hope. I leaned against the railing, taking deep breaths and trying to find some semblance of calm.

But the image of Elara, cold and unfeeling, kept flashing through my mind. I rubbed my temples, trying to erase the memory. I couldn't let it affect me. I had to stay strong, for Elara's sake and for the kingdom.

After a while, I felt my breathing return to normal. I straightened up and took one last look at the stars before heading back inside. Elara was still sleeping soundly, unaware of the turmoil that had shaken me.

I climbed back into bed, careful not to disturb her, and lay there, staring at the ceiling until the first light of dawn began to creep through the curtains.

When morning finally came, I slipped out of bed and went to prepare for the day. I splashed cold water on my face, hoping it would help me shake off the remnants of the nightmare.

As I looked at my reflection in the mirror, I forced a determined expression. Today was a new day, and I couldn't afford to let a dream, no matter how disturbing, affect me.

I dressed quickly and headed to the training grounds. I needed to focus on something physical, something that would help me regain control. The guards were already there, practicing their drills. I joined them, pushing myself harder than usual, channeling my fear and frustration into every movement.

"Morning, Commander," one of the guards greeted me as I joined their ranks.

"Morning," I replied curtly, my focus already on the training.

As the morning wore on, I found myself slowly relaxing. The familiar routines and the physical exertion helped ground me. By the time we finished, I felt more in control, though the memory of the nightmare still lingered at the back of my mind.

After training, I went to my office to catch up on paperwork. There were reports to review, strategies to plan, and a myriad of other tasks that required my attention. I buried myself in work, hoping it would keep my mind occupied.

Around noon, a knock on the door interrupted my concentration. "Come in," I called out.

The door opened, and Elara stepped in, a bright smile on her face. "Hey, I was looking for you. I didn't see you this morning."

I forced a smile, hoping it didn't look as strained as it felt. "Good morning, Elara. I had an early start. How are you feeling?"

"Better now that I found you," she said, walking over to my desk. "Do you have a minute? I thought we could

"have lunch together."

I looked at the pile of papers on my desk, feeling a pang of guilt. I needed to prioritize Elara, especially after what I had seen in the nightmare. "Of course, let's go."

We made our way to the dining hall. The servants had already prepared a lovely spread, and I took the opportunity to pull out a chair for Elara, trying to focus on her instead of my lingering anxiety.

As we sat down, she looked at me, her eyes filled with concern. "You seem a bit off today, Seraphina. Is everything alright?"

I forced another smile, hoping it seemed genuine. "Just a lot on my mind, but nothing I can't handle."

She didn't seem entirely convinced, but she nodded and began talking about her plans for the day. I listened intently, trying to push aside the nightmare and concentrate on the present.

Lunch passed uneventfully, and I found myself relaxing a little in Elara's presence. She had a way of grounding me, making me feel like everything would be alright. When we finished, she stood up and gave me a quick kiss on the cheek. "I'll see you later. Don't work too hard, okay?"

"I won't," I promised, watching her leave before turning back to my work.

The afternoon was a blur of meetings and reports. I met with my spies to discuss the ongoing investigation into the mercenary Varis. They had been making progress, but it was slow going. The man was elusive, and tracking him down was proving to be a challenge.

"Commander, we have reason to believe that Varis is hiding in the southern forests," one of my top spies reported. "We've had sightings and a few leads that suggest he's gathering forces there."

I nodded, my mind already working on a plan. "Good work. Increase surveillance in that area and keep me updated on any new developments."

The spy nodded and left, leaving me alone with my thoughts. The nightmare still haunted me, and the idea of Elara being in danger was unbearable. I had to find Varis and put an end to this threat once and for all.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself feeling drained. I needed to see Elara, to reassure myself that she was safe. I headed back to our chambers, hoping she would be there.

When I arrived, I found her sitting on the balcony, watching the sunset. She turned and smiled as I approached. "Hey, how was your day?"

"Busy," I admitted, sitting down beside her. "But it's better now."

We sat in comfortable silence for a while, watching the sky change colors. Finally, I turned to her, needing to ask. "Elara, have you ever had a dream that felt so real, it shook you to your core?"

She looked at me, surprised by the question. "Sometimes. Why?"

I took a deep breath, deciding to share a little. "I had a nightmare last night. It felt so real, and it was about you. It scared me."

She reached out, taking my hand in hers. "Seraphina, I'm here. Whatever it was, it was just a dream. We're safe."

Her words were comforting, but the fear lingered. "I know. But I can't shake it. I just need you to be careful."

"I will," she promised, squeezing my hand. "And you need to take care of yourself too. We both need to stay strong."

I nodded, feeling a little better. "You're right. Thank you, Elara."

Elara pulled me into a gentle embrace, her warmth enveloping me. "You're always so strong, Seraphina," she murmured against my shoulder, "but it's okay to lean on me too."

I wrapped my arms around her, burying my face in her hair, the familiar scent calming my racing thoughts. "I just... I worry about you," I admitted softly.

She pulled back slightly, just enough to look into my eyes. "And I worry about you," she replied, her gaze filled with love and concern. "But we'll face everything together. You don't have to carry the burden alone."

I felt a tear escape, and she wiped it away gently with her thumb. "I'm here for you, always," she whispered, pulling me back into a tight hug. Her embrace was a balm to my soul, soothing the lingering fear and anxiety.

We stayed like that for a while, wrapped in each other's arms, drawing strength from our connection. The world outside might be filled with threats and uncertainties, but in that moment, everything felt right. I knew that as long as we had each other, we could face whatever challenges lay ahead.
