Chapter 95: Stranger things
With the dust all settled and bodies laid across the ground courtesy of Reggie, Randal and Gunther, the trio stared at everyone in the bar, almost as though they were challenging anyone else that had the nerves to come out them.
But of course after the brutal show they put on, no one dared challenge them.
Reggie, turning to Rose who still had the blood glass in her hand, seemingly oblivious to the chaos that had just died down moments ago looked at his master with sad eyes.
He then carely took the glass of blood from her hand and sniffed it.
'Strange scent. This is indeed A positive but...there's something else in it,' Reggie could tell the blood in itself wasn't all too pure.
But how did it get by Rose? Surely with her keen senses, she should have detected there was a foreign scent in it. But judging from the present state she was in and all the turmoil surrounding her as of late, he saw how a critical detail as a subtle scent in the blood she was served would fly over her head.
Now, with stiffened hands, he dropped the glass on the table. White pale knuckles squeezed hard around the glass but careful enough not to break it with his inhuman strenght.
He looked around the bar.
'She's gone,' Reggie noted as he couldn't find the bartender anywhere. Ingrid had seemingly vanished out of sight.
She must have left during the time they were dealing with the petty vampires that wanted to rob Rose.
As strange as it was, Reggie didn't think too much about it. But a part of him wondered why a group of common vampires would dare go against a lord like Rose.
Surely, her scent should have given her powers away from a mile. But on the other hand, seeing with the ease he dealt with each one and the inexperience on their part to use their powers to full effect, perhaps these were merely kids that knew nothing, even though physically, they all looked like certified men.
The vampire community's idea of old was quite different from how humans saw it.
Their lives ended quite shortly. By mere looking at them he could tell they weren't past a hundred years old. Which in itself was not considered too young either.
"My lord, let us take you home," Reggie said, turning his attention back to Rose. He looked at her with compassion and pity.
The whole Blake situation was weighing heavily on her and he could tell. Being the closest of the three to Rose, he knew her more than anyone and could tell quite alright that Rose was in the worst shape he had ever seen her.
He couldn't have ever imagined seeing his larger than life, absolutely impenetrable and beautiful master in such state, ever!
But it turned out all that was needed to trip an elephant was a small pebble.
In Rose's case, her affection towards a human may have become the instrument to her downfall.
Nonetheless, they had to leave this unbefitting environs.
It was bad enough that they were seen there but could be even worse even anyone saw Rose in her present condition.
"Mmm.. Reggie? Why...why are you ...why are you staring at me that way?" Rose asked between belches.
Perhaps this was the only time they saw Rose slightly fall off being perfect. It was a strange feeling for Randal, Gunther and Reggie, the main man himself.
"I'm sorry my lord. But let's get you back home. Claire awaits you. She's made a bath for you," Reggie said.
"Will Blake be there?" Rose asked, drunken to stupor.
"..."
Reggie stared at her for a minute and for the first time he appeared to be clueless.
Perhaps not.
No, he was struck hard.
Felt a pain he didn't know he could ever feel. Empathy for his master perhaps?
Even in her drunken state, all she could think of was this mortal that had captured her cold heart.
What had Blake done to his master?
"Y..yes," Reggie said, helping Rose up and heading for the exit. As he did, he passed by Randal and Gunther who gave him an approving nod. They knew this was what they had to do. This was their blessing and curse.
A joyful misery perhaps it seemed that they would be forever tied to this woman. But in the end, her joy was their joy and her sorrow was their agony.
Which was why as they drove back to Rose's penthouse, Reggie had a plan already formulating in his head.
Rose was not in the right state of mind but they were. The trio would take charge of things and restore order as they always did. They were her enforcers but for so long, they had used anything but force.
Perhaps this was a reminder to them that they had gone soft. That they needed to wake up to reality?
This world, these people, they didn't need pampering.
They needed something that would tilt them back on the road.
They needed to be reminded that there were things far much more scarier than death itself. Things not seen nor thought of before, not even in movies.
There were stranger things out there.
*****************
Rose emerged from her room, the click of her heels echoing in the hallway as she made her way toward the entrance of her opulent penthouse. Reggie, her loyal driver and confidant, stood by the door, his sharp eyes scanning her for any signs of the previous night's revelries. To his amazement, Rose appeared composed and unruffled, as if the chaos of the night before had never occurred.
Reggie admired her unmatched composure, marveling at how effortlessly she concealed any hint of vulnerability. Deep down, however, he knew that Rose likely harbored her own inner turmoil, hidden beneath a facade of strength and poise.
"Reggie, I'll be going out alone. The keys please," Rose requested, her voice calm and collected as she extended her hand.
Reggie hesitated for a moment, surprised by the unusual request. Nevertheless, he retrieved the keys from his pocket and handed them to her, his expression unreadable beneath his stoic demeanor.
"Thank you," Rose said, her fingers closing around the keys before she turned to descend the stairs leading to the lower portion of the penthouse.
Before she could make her departure, however, Rose paused and glanced back at Reggie, her features softened by a faint smile. It was a smile that held both warmth and warning, leaving Reggie uncertain of its true meaning.
"Oh, Reggie. I won't get into any trouble today. So please stay at home and don't follow me everywhere I go," Rose said, her voice laced with a hint of amusement and something else.
On one hand it looked like a smile perhaps in acknowledgement of how they followed her discreetly last night to the bar without her knowing but on the other, it looked like a warning. And Reggie was not exactly a gambler. He wasn't keen on risking finding out which way the smile went.
"Yes, my lord" Reggie bowed respectfully, his gaze meeting hers for a brief moment before she turned and continued on her way. As he watched her disappear from view, Reggie couldn't shake the feeling of unease that lingered in the air.
