Chapter 346: A dragon?!!!
Over the next few hours, as they journeyed towards the Teeth of the World, Blake practiced whenever they stopped to rest. He worked on increasing the density of his constructs, on maintaining multiple forms simultaneously, on pushing the range of his control.
The others watched with a mixture of awe and unease. Randal, in particular, seemed conflicted.
At evening, as they sat around the campfire, Randal finally spoke up. "Blake," he began hesitantly, "I've been thinking about your abilities."
Blake tensed, unsure of where this was going. "Yes?"
Randal took a deep breath. "I was wondering... have you ever considered using them for more than just fighting? I mean, with that level of control over blood, you could potentially heal injuries, maybe even cure diseases."
The idea struck Blake like a thunderbolt. He'd been so focused on combat applications that he'd never considered the healing potential. "I... I never thought about it that way," he admitted.
Dumphries leaned forward, his eyes gleaming with intellectual curiosity. "It's an intriguing possibility. The ability to manipulate blood at a cellular level could revolutionize healing."
As they discussed the potential applications, Blake felt a glimmer of hope. Maybe there was a reason he'd been given these powers. Maybe he could use them to help people, not just to fight. However, for now it was about saving Rose which meant the journey had to continue.
The journey to the Teeth of the World was arduous. They crossed vast plains, forded rushing rivers, and navigated treacherous mountain paths. All the while, Blake pushed himself, refining his control and experimenting with new techniques.
Throughout their journey, the group relied on a combination of carefully rationed supplies and survival skills.
Before leaving the Valley of Echoes, they had stocked up on dried meats, hard cheeses, and preserved fruits. Dumphries had also prepared a concentrated trail mix of nuts, dried berries, and herbs that provided essential nutrients in a compact form.
For water, they carried waterskins, refilling them at streams and rivers during their overland travel. As they entered the drier mountain terrain, Dumpheries knowledge of plants proved invaluable. He showed the group how to collect water from certain succulent plants and how to use cloth to gather morning dew.
Once they entered caverns, water became less of an issue. The cave systems had numerous underground streams and pools.
Food, however, became more challenging in the depths. They rationed their remaining supplies carefully. Though, being vampires, they required less sustenance, which helped extend their resources. In the caverns, Dumphries identified certain edible fungi that supplemented their dwindling rations.
Finally, after a day of travel, they stood at the base of the imposing mountain range. Jagged peaks stretched as far as the eye could see, their snow-capped summits lost in the clouds.
"So," Reggie said, consulting the journal once more, "we're looking for a hidden entrance. Any ideas where to start?"
Dumphries closed his eyes, muttering an incantation under his breath. A faint shimmer appeared in the air before him, coalescing into a spectral map. "There," he said, pointing to a spot near the center of the range. "I sense a concentration of ancient magic. That must be the entrance to the cavern system leading to the Spring of Eternal Night."
'Still new to this world but everything seems to be tied down to magic,' Blake thought seeing the last bit of trick Dumphries had pulled. From what he had seen, vampires could perform magic although Randal had mentioned only a few could and that required special training different from the ones undertook if a vampire wanted to hone their natural skills and abilities as a fledgling.
As they began their ascent, the air grew colder and thinner. The terrain became increasingly treacherous, with narrow ledges and sudden drop-offs. More than once, Blake had to use his blood to create bridges or handholds for the group.
After hours of climbing, they huddled in a small cave to escape a sudden snowstorm. It was already dark outside when Randal voiced the question they'd all been thinking. "What if we can't defeat this guardian?" he asked. "What if we've come all this way for nothing?"
Silence fell over the group. Blake stared into the small fire, watching the flames dance. Finally, he spoke. "We don't have a choice," he said quietly. "Rose is counting on us. I won't let her down."
Reggie nodded firmly. "We're in this together. Whatever this guardian is, we'll face it as a team."
As the storm raged outside, they discussed strategies, pored over ancient texts, and prepared as best they could for the unknown challenges ahead.
The next morning, they stood at a narrow crevice in the mountainside, barely visible unless you knew exactly where to look. Cold air rushed out of the opening, carrying with it the musty scent of long-undisturbed earth.
"This is it," Dumphries said, his voice hushed with awe. "The entrance to the caverns of the Spring of Eternal Night."
They lit torches and began their descent into the mountain's depths. The passage twisted and turned, leading them ever downward. The air grew colder, the darkness more oppressive.
After what felt like hours, they emerged into a vast cavern. Their torchlight barely penetrated the gloom, revealing glimpses of strange, phosphorescent fungi and bizarre rock formations.
"We must be careful from here on," Dumphries warned. "The creatures that dwell in these depths have never known light. They'll be drawn to our torches... and not in a friendly way."
As if in response to his words, a low, multitoned hum began to echo through the cavern. It started soft, almost at the edge of hearing, but quickly grew in volume and complexity.
"What is that?" Randal whispered, his hand going to his sword.
Blake felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. There was something unnatural about the sound, something that set his nerves on edge.
Suddenly, the humming stopped. The silence that followed was somehow even more unnerving.
Then, from the darkness ahead, came a voice. It was deep and resonant, seeming to come from everywhere and nowhere at once.
"Who dares to enter the realm of eternal night?" it boomed. "Who seeks the waters that have never known the sun's touch?"
Blake stepped forward, his blood singing in his veins, ready to be called upon. "We do," he said, his voice steady despite the fear coursing through him. "We've come seeking the Spring of Eternal Night."
A low, rumbling chuckle echoed through the cavern, sending shivers down their spines. "Many have sought the spring," the voice said. "None have survived to taste its waters."
The darkness ahead seemed to deepen, to coalesce into a solid form. Blake readied himself, calling his blood to the surface of his skin.
"But you," the voice continued, a note of curiosity creeping in, "you are different. You carry power within your veins... power that does not belong in this world."
Blake felt the others tense behind him, ready for battle. He took a deep breath, steeling himself for whatever was about to emerge from the shadows.
"Tell me, blood-wielder," the voice growled, "are you prepared to face the trials of the eternal night? Are you willing to sacrifice everything for what you seek?"
As Blake opened his mouth to respond, a massive shape began to take form in the darkness before them. The air crackled with ancient power, and the very stone beneath their feet seemed to tremble.
The guardian of the Spring of Eternal Night had awakened. And the true test was about to begin.
