Chapter 279: Temptations unleashed (Bonus chapter!)
As he pondered upon it more, he began to consider a few things.
Could this hulking, weathered vampire truly understand the harrowing metamorphosis raging within him? Did he really grasp the scope of the turmoil threatening to tear Blake asunder from the inside out?
As if sensing the swirling doubts, Gunther offered him a lopsided grin, the expression reminding Blake jarringly of the carefree youth he glimpsed lurking behind his coarse exterior now and then.
"Enough of the brooding pontificating for one day, eh?" Gunther chuckled, rising fluidly from the bed with a sly glint in his eye. "I've got a proposition that'll do your maudlin soul a world of good: how's about we blow off this dreary safe house for a few hours? Give yourself a chance to blow off some real steam?"
Blake arched a skeptical brow at his companion, crossing his arms over his barrelled chest. "Didn't Reggie pass the instruction that no one should step out? And by "No one" I mean ME?. And just what, pray tell, did you have in mind?"
Gunther's grin stretched even wider, taking on a distinctly wolfish quality.
"Well now, isn't that the million dollar question? And is Reggie here to stop us from having fun?" He rumbled, eyeing Blake with undisguised mischief. "How's about you keep an open mind and let me be the judge of that?"
Before Blake could muster a rejoinder, Gunther strode purposefully towards the bedroom door, throwing a roguish wink over his shoulder.
"Go on and change into something less...domestic," he all but purred. "Meet me back out here in five".
Gunther's mischievous grin was the only warning before he led Blake out into the inky night. The safe house rules lay shattered in their wake as they made their way to the heart of the city's pulsing nightlife scene.
Neon lights flickered and danced off rain-soaked streets, beckoning them into the trendy club district. The rhythmic thump of bass lines grew louder with every step. Shadows clustered around the entrances like carnivorous plants, clouds of smoke and indistinct murmurs betraying the debauchery within.
Blake hung back, pulling his hat low over his pale features - a feeble attempt to conceal his unnatural new appearance. Rogue streaks of midnight cut through his once brown tresses. Gunther had made some offhand joke about him dipping his hair in paint because he now possess strands of black and white hair, but they both knew there was nothing accidental about these changes.
Gunther slowed his gait to fall in step with his brooding companion. "Don't get all sulky on me now. You've been cooped up too long - you need to cut loose for once."
Blake shot him a sidelong glance from beneath his cap's brim. "And a nightclub is your brilliant solution? You know what I'm capable of now...what I crave."
A heartbeat of silence passed between them, the bass line's seductive throb echoing Gunther's next words. "Maybe that's exactly why we're here."
Before Blake could protest further, Gunther grabbed his arm and pulled him through the club's doors and into a maelstrom of sound and heat.
The assault on Blake's heightened senses was instantaneous. A dozen different rhythms pounded through his bones, vying for dominance. A kaleidoscope of laser lights lanced across his dilated pupils. The cloying reek of sweat, smoke and spilled alcohol clogged his nostrils, undergirded by something deeper, headier...the rich copper tang of human vitality.
He squeezed his eyes shut, fighting back the gnawing hunger that flared within him.
A firm hand on his shoulder made his lids fly open again. Gunther leaned in close, his breath hot against Blake's ear. "Easy there, cowboy. First round's on me."
Gunther guided them to the bar, shouting drink orders to be heard over the roar. He grinned as he passed a glass to Blake. "Few things cure what ails ya like a good stiff drink."
Blake eyed the amber liquid skeptically before throwing it back in one burning swallow. The whiskey's smoky tendrils spread through his chest, temporarily banking the cold fire in his gut.
Glass after glass followed in rapidfire succession, until at last Blake felt the world tilting pleasantly around him. The pressing hunger receded into a dull throb, overpowered by the alcohol's numbing embrace.
But it was only for a moment. The influence died off in matter of minutes and it all felt like he hadn't just chugged off multiple shots down his throat. Was this part of the change that occurred when he became a vampire? Wait, so alcohol held little sway over him?
'This sucks,' he thought.
Gunther slapped him on the back with a laugh. "That's more like it! C'mon, let's go scope out some scenery."
The pair wove through the churning press of bodies, coming to rest on a platform near the pulsing heart of the dance floor. A smog of hairspray and perfume hung in the air, mingling with the hazy lights.
Blake caught Gunther's wandering gaze, following it to a sleek raven-haired beauty undulating her hips in time to the hammering beat. Her obsidian locks shimmered like liquid silk with every toss of her head. She wore a skintight bandage dress that sculpted every lush curve, the perilous neckline sashaying dangerously low with each movement.
Gunther murmured with an elbow to Blake's ribs. Before his friend could reply, the lady's kohl-rimmed eyes flicked up and met Blake's gaze from across the room. A playful smirk curved her mouth as she made no attempt to hide her blatant perusal. After maintaining the heated look for a long moment, she gave a subtle beck of her head in summons.
The lady moved with predatory grace, eyes locked on Blake's as she closed the distance between them. A single fingertip traced a scorching path up his chest as she leaned in until her lips were a hair's breadth from his. "Aren't you going to buy a girl a drink?"
Blake managed a thick swallow, caught between rapture and dread at her proximity.
The lady asked seductively, "Come on handsome, let's dance"
