Chapter 246: Unholy Rose
"What are you talking about? Are you alright?" Reggie asked, trying to approach her to see what was wrong with her for blabbering so much nonsense.
"I know what you are," she declared, her voice trembling with a mix of fear and defiance. "Vampires. So don't try to play innocent with me. I saw the darkness in the eyes of the man who was sent to kill us by Elena, the same darkness that I see in yours. You can't fool me into thinking you're any different,"
Reggie's brows furrowed, his gaze shifting uncomfortably under the weight of Nana's accusation. He opened his mouth to protest, but Nana cut him off with a sharp gesture.
"Don't bother denying it," she continued, her tone laced with bitterness. "You are wondering why I'm not scared? What is there to be scared of any more? I will die anyway so you might as well just stop all this acting. I know what I saw back there in the village,"
Reggie opened his mouth to respond, but before he could utter a word, Gunther erupted into laughter. His booming guffaws echoed off the walls of the cave, filling the space with an unexpected sense of levity.
"You know what, Reggie?" Gunther chuckled, wiping tears of mirth from his eyes. "I think she might be onto something after all. Maybe it is better if we let her run off on her own. If she thinks she can survive Elena's wrath, then so be it."
Reggie shot Gunther a reproachful glare, but Gunther's laughter only seemed to intensify. In that moment, Nana realized that he wasn't laughing at her, but at the absurdity of their situation. It was a sobering realization, one that caused her anger to ebb away, replaced by a sense of resignation.
Reggie sighed and shook his head, his expression conflicted. He turned towards Nana, his eyes filled with a mixture of sympathy and determination. "I'm sorry, Nana," he began, his voice heavy with regret. "We didn't mean to involve you in any of this. But now that you're here, we'll do everything we can to keep you safe."
Nana met Reggie's gaze, her heart heavy with uncertainty. She knew that she was walking into the unknown, but she also knew that she couldn't turn back now. She didn't know if it was fear or she had just been bewitched but somehow she had taken his hand when he reached out to her without a single thought. Now it seemed that charm had faded and she knew she was in big trouble.
But instead of anger or hostility, Nana's words seemed to strike a chord within them, stirring a sense of empathy and understanding. Despite the risks involved, they couldn't deny the truth of her accusations. They were vampires, and they had been caught red-handed.
With a heavy sigh, Reggie stepped forward, his gaze meeting Nana's with a newfound sense of respect.
"You're right, Nana," he admitted, his voice tinged with regret. "We are vampires. And yes, we have our own reasons for being here, reasons that we can't share with you right now. But please believe me when I say that we're not working for Elena,"
Nana regarded Reggie's words with a mixture of skepticism and hope. Could she trust him? Could she trust any of them? It was a question that lingered in the back of her mind, overshadowed by the uncertainty of their future.
"But I need to know Nana," Reggie began, "What did yours people do to deserve such treatment. Since you already know the details, it wouldn't be strange to assume your people are of great ...asset to Elena, correct? So why would she just..."
Nana's gaze drifted downward, her mind replaying the night's horrors like a relentless loop.
"What did my people do to deserve Elena's wrath?" she echoed, her voice barely above a whisper. Slowly, she turned to face Reggie, tears glistening in her eyes.
"They... they did nothing," she choked out, her voice thick with emotion. "They were innocent. They didn't deserve any of this."
As she spoke, memories of the village under siege flooded back to her, each one more vivid and harrowing than the last. She saw faces contorted in agony, heard screams of terror echoing through the night, felt the weight of guilt pressing down on her like a suffocating blanket.
"I saw people dying tonight," she confessed, her voice trembling with raw anguish. "In the most gruesome way imaginable. And... and it's all my fault."
Reggie's brow furrowed in confusion, his expression a mix of concern and empathy. "What do you mean, Nana?" he asked gently, reaching out to comfort her.
Nana shook her head, her tears flowing freely now. "I... I befriended one of Elena's lackeys," she confessed, her voice trembling with self-loathing.
"I brought this upon everyone in the village. I...I watched my bethrod...I.. watched Kabib do it. I watched him attack Blake and killed him,"
As Nana's words hung heavy in the air, Reggie's mind raced with a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions. The name "Blake" echoed in his mind like a haunting refrain, sending shivers down his spine.
"Blake?" Reggie repeated, his voice barely above a whisper. "Did you say Blake?"
Nana nodded solemnly, her eyes brimming with tears. "Yes," she confirmed, her voice trembling with emotion. "Kabib... he caught me with Blake and killed him. He disappeared some days ago. I suspect Elena caught him and now she's out for the entire village.
We...we were preparing...we only needed a day to be ready for her. The eclipse is just right around the corner...we.."
Reggie's heart clenched with a mixture of sorrow and disbelief. Could it be true? Had Kabib really killed Blake, the same Blake they had been searching for all this time? The same Blake they were looking for or another one? So their suspicions were true? Elena did adopt Blake and now somehow he was dead?
"I... I thought he was a vampire but it turned out he wasn't . He trusted me and was nice to me. But...but..." Nana broke into tears on the floor.
However not everyone shared the same sympathy with her. Gunther's patience wore thin as he heard Nana speak. her words like daggers stabbing at his already frayed nerves. Unable to bear it anymore, he moved with a blur, catching Nana by the throat and lifting her up, his eyes glowing a fierce shade of crimson.
"You've said enough," Gunther growled, his voice low and menacing. "Turns out you were right about us after all." He tightened his grip on her throat, his anger boiling over. "We've been searching for Blake for months, only to find out you let your boyfriend kill him!"
Nana's eyes widened in shock and fear as Gunther's words sank in. The realization of her own culpability washed over her, and she struggled against Gunther's iron grip, gasping for breath.
Reggie and Randall moved to intervene, but Gunther's glare stopped them in their tracks. His eyes blazed with fury as he continued to hold Nana aloft, his grip unyielding.
"You think Elena is bad?" he growled, his voice low and dangerous. "You have no idea what's coming for you, Nana. There's someone out there far worse than Elena. And when Rose finds out what you and your boyfriend did to Blake, you'll wish... you'll pray that Elena had you first."
Nana's blood ran cold at Gunther's words, the weight of his threat hanging heavy in the air. She knew she had made a grave mistake, but the full extent of its consequences was only now beginning to sink in.
Reggie stepped forward, placing a reassuring hand on Gunther's shoulder, his touch firm yet gentle. "Easy, Gunther," he murmured, his voice a soothing balm. "We can't afford to lose control now. Not when there's still so much at stake."
Gunther's tense muscles relaxed slightly under Reggie's touch, his eyes still burning with anger but the fire slowly simmering down to a smoldering ember. He nodded curtly, acknowledging Reggie's words, though the fury still lingered beneath the surface.
Turning his attention to Elena, Reggie's demeanor shifted, his usually calm facade giving way to a simmering rage that bubbled just beneath the surface. "You...you have crossed a line," he spat, his voice low and dangerous. "Blake is dead because of you. Rose trusted us to find him, to bring him home safely, and we failed her. We failed him."
But there were more pressing matters at hand. Turning to Nana, Reggie's tone softened slightly, though his eyes still burned with determination. "Take us to where it happened," he said, his voice steady. "We need to find Blake's body, give him a proper burial. Rose deserves to see him one last time."
Nana nodded silently, her eyes filled with remorse and guilt. She knew she had brought this upon herself and now she was determined to set things right, to atone for her mistakes.
Reggie turned to his brothers, his voice held a steely resolve. "No more hiding in the shadows," he declared, his words ringing with authority. "Blake may be gone, but Elena is still out there, and we will find her. We will make her pay for what she's done."
With a silent nod of agreement, Gunther and Randall fell into step behind Reggie, their anger was one thing they shared in common at that moment. But deep within they all wondered how they'd face Rose.
