I personally feel that you can read this phrase in many ways but generally its understood in the direction of theres more important things in life. Dont be superficial, be loyal, dont bite the hand that feeds you. The origin of this saying actually dates back to the Song Dynasty during which the high monk Shi Fancong wrote in hisNinety-three Gathas:
